Guidelines for Eating and Drinking Safely While Working Onsite

Safety is Always on the Menu
To minimize the spread of COVID-19, please take the precautions when dining in shared spaces or breakrooms.

Updated Sept. 21, 2020

To ensure the health and safety of our community, UCSF requires everyone who eats or drinks on campus to adhere to the following safety guidelines and protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Remember, eating or drinking when others are nearby puts you and those around you at increased risk for COVID-19 because you must remove your face covering to eat or drink. People often touch their faces with their hands when eating or drinking. In addition, meals are usually considered a time for conversation, which further increases risk, especially if you are talking to others during a meal at which you and those around you are not wearing your face coverings.

When convening in any shared space, including a break, conference, charting or team room:

  • Wear a face covering at all times
  • Wear eye protection when not physically distanced and when others are unmasked
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before and after convening
  • Maintain physical distance of at least 6 feet

When eating or drinking in a shared space or outdoors, please make sure you:

  • Maintain physical distance of at least 6 feet
  • Replace your mask as soon as possible after eating or drinking
  • Wear eye protection while around others who are unmasked while they eat or drink
  • Clean surfaces before and after eating or drinking
  • When feasible, eat meals outdoors instead of using cafeterias or dining rooms
  • Use individually plated or bagged meals
  • Do not use shared tables or self-service buffets
  • Make sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer immediately before and after eating

Always remember to:

  • Leave shared spaces clean and ready for the next person to use
  • Respectfully remind colleagues to properly wear their face coverings
  • Stay home when sick

Shared Outdoor Break Areas

Some outdoor spaces at the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus have been repurposed to serve as break areas where onsite workers can safely physically distance while eating or taking a break.

Tables and chairs from The Pub at the Mission Bay Conference Center have been relocated to Parnassus Heights and arranged to create physically distanced seating options with one chair per table. New outdoor break areas are located at:

  • ACC Terrace – 8 tables and chairs
  • Saunders Court – 8 tables and chairs
  • Lucia Child Care Center – 3 tables and chairs
  • Exterior Kalmanovitz Library – 3 tables and chairs

The tables and chairs will be cleaned once per day at each site. Users are also asked to use the disinfectant and paper towels provided at the Do-It-Yourself cleaning stations located near each break area. As an additional safety measure, a Safe Eating Guidelines flyer will be attached to each chair for your reference.

Please remember to abide by the Safe Eating Guidelines every time you enjoy a meal or beverage while onsite at UCSF.
